Running a food truck on the Gold Coast or in Brisbane isn't just about serving up the best fries or burgers. It’s about staying on top of the regulations that keep our community safe. If you’ve been eyeing school fetes, sports days, or lunchtime pop ups, you need to be aware of the recent, major shift in Queensland Blue Card requirements.
As of early 2026, the landscape has fully changed. Here is what you need to know to keep your business compliant and your bookings secure.
The Big Date: September 20, 2025
While the Blue Card system has existed for years, the rules for external contractors (like food truck owners and their staff) significantly tightened on September 20, 2025.
Before this change, many food vendors operated under a frequency test or incidental contact exemption. However, under the new Queensland Government legislation, the requirements became much stricter for anyone carrying out work on school grounds while children are present.
What Changed?
Education Services Category: A new category was solidified for "Education services and activities conducted inside a school." This explicitly includes business owners and operators whose work takes place within school boundaries.
No Card, No Start: This policy is now the law. If you are a new hire or a new business starting work at a school, you must have your valid Blue Card in hand before you even step onto the property.
The End of the Grace Period: For existing operators who were already serving schools before the changes, a grace period was provided. That window officially closed on March 20, 2026.
Do All My Staff Need One?
In short: Yes.
Schools are now under increased pressure to audit their Register of Visitors and Contractors. Expect school administrators to ask for your Blue Card numbers and verify them through the Blue Card Services online portal before they confirm your booking.
How to Stay Compliant in 2026
To ensure your food truck doesn't miss out on lucrative school event season, follow these steps:
Audit Your Team: Ensure every person who works on the truck has a current Paid Blue Card.
Link Your Organisation: If you are a business owner, ensure your employees are linked to your business account in the Blue Card portal.
Update Your Booking Pack: Include a PDF or a list of your team's Blue Card numbers and expiry dates in your initial email to school P&C committees.
Check Expiry Dates: Blue Cards usually last three years. Don't let yours lapse; renew at least 30 days before it expires to avoid the; No Card, No Start trap.
Why This Matters for Gold Coast Foodies
These changes aren't just red tape, they are about creating a safe environment for Queensland kids. By staying ahead of these regulations, Gold Coast food truck owners prove they are trusted partners in the community.
Planning a school event? Make sure you ask your vendors for their Blue Card status early in the planning process to avoid any last-minute hiccups!
